Today's NUBS

The origin of the NUBS (http://nubs.nju.edu.cn) can be traced to the Business Section of the Sanjiang Normal College in 1902. In the adjustment of the departments of Chinese universities in 1952, the specialties of economics and management at Nanjing University were moved to other universities. In 1978, the Department of Economics was restored at Nanjing University, and later in 1986 the Department of Enterprise Management was established. The NUBS was founded on the basis of the two departments in 1988.

Since its establishment, the NUBS has gradually formed a structure of coordinative and multi-discipline development. It has two schools ? the School of Economics and the School of Management. The former consists of 4 departments: Economics, International Economics and Trade, Finance and Insurance, and Industrial Economics, while the latter has 5 departments: Business Administration, Accounting, Electronic Business, Marketing, and Human Resource Management. In addition, the NUBS has set up many research institutes including the Population Research Institute, the Research Institute of Econometrics and Technological Economics, Research Center for Investment and Finance, the Marketing Research and Consulting Center, the Research Institute of Enterprise Strategy, the Research and Learning Center for Finance and Accounting of Jiangsu, the Research Center for Real Estate Information, Guan Bai Hao International Finance Research Institute, the Research Institute of International Economics, Corporate and Security Research Center, and the Human Resource Strategy Research Institute. The NUBS provides 10 undergraduate programs, 14 postgraduate programs (including MBA, EMBA, and MPAcc), 3 doctoral programs under the first-class discipline, 2 doctoral programs under the second-class discipline, 3 post-doctoral stations, 2 national key disciplines, 1 national economics talent training base, 1 national innovation base of the second phase of the “985 Project”, and 2 key research bases of the humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education.

The NUBS has a vigorous faculty team of high academic level and phenomenal influence. Currently, there are 163 faculty and staff, including 53 professors (38 Ph.D. advisors) and 56 associate professors. Among them, 2 are designated as Chang Jiang Scholarship Professor; 3 are entitled as the National Famous Teacher; 1 is conferred the National Outstanding Young Expert; 2 are listed in the One-hundred plus One-thousand plus Ten-thousand Talent Project of the Ministry of Education; 2 are included in the Trans-century Excellent Talents Program of the Ministry of Education; and 4 professors have obtained the New Century Excellent Talents Project Fund of the Ministry of Education. 70% of the faculty members have obtained doctoral degrees and 26 have studied abroad.

In respect of talent training, the NUBS focuses on “strengthening basis, emphasizing application, developing ability, and enhancing quality” and has cultivated numerous professionals in economics and management who are well received by enterprises. Now it has 1,417 undergraduates, 238 doctoral students, 708 master students, 860 MBA participants, 202 EMBA participants, 195 international MBA (EMBA) participants, and 382 MPAcc participants. With the approval by the Ministry of Education in 1992, the NUBS, as the first educating institution in China to go abroad, held an MBA education program in Singapore in the same year. Ever since then, it has successively held 11 MBA programs in Singapore and has produced more than 200 MBA graduates. The NUBS has established EMBA and IMBA programs with the Maastricht School of Management, the Connell University, and the University of Missouri to train internationalized excellent managerial talents. In 2006, the World Executives (Hong Kong) Summit issued the ranking of the Most Influential MBA Series. The NUBS ranked the 3rd following the Guanghua Management School of Peking University and the School of Economics and Management of Tsinghua University. In 2005, the World Executives, with the United Financial Times and the People’s Net, published the Most Influential MBA in China and the EMBA and Sino-Dutch MBA at the NUBS was ranked the fifth.

In scientific research, from 2003 to 2010, the faculty members have successively undertaken 39 projects sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation, 25 projects sponsored by the National Social Science Foundation, and 16 projects sponsored by the Humanities and Social Sciences Foundation of the Ministry of Education, have published 188 works, 12 papers in the SSCI and SCI journals, 1319 papers in the first-class and core journals, and have obtained 68 prizes of provincial level or above. The NUBS has hosted various academic activities, such as the Smith Forum, the Drucker Forum, the MBA Expert Forum, etc., for years. These forums have activated the academic atmosphere and are well received by the faculty and students.

In international exchange, the NUBS has been devoted to strengthening academic exchange and cooperation with foreign universities and has built up stable relationships with such universities as the Connell University, the University of Southern California, the University of Nebraska, and the University of Missouri of the United States, the University of Sydney of Australia, the Maastricht School of Management of the Netherlands, the Cambridge University and the Leeds University of the United Kingdom, the Monosh University of Australia, the National University of Singapore, and the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore. The NUBS frequently invites Nobel Prize Laureates in economics, world known scholars, and CEOs from multinational corporations to deliver lectures or conduct cooperative researches with the faculties. It assigns faculty members to the Harvard University, the Connell University, and other universities to study. Meanwhile, the NUBS enrolls foreign students in different programs. Since 1992, the NUBS has hosted the Symposium on Multinational Operations of Enterprises for 5 times. In May 2006, it organized the 2nd Annual Conference of the International Association of Chinese Management Research (IACM) jointly with the IACM.

The NUBS has been actively engaged in providing social services. Since 1997, it has held the Jiangsu High-level Forum on Development for several times to help with the development strategies of Jiangsu Province. Meanwhile, it has held Entrepreneur High-level Forum and set up the Graduate Course Program and the Advanced Course Program for Senior Executives to provide enterprises with talent training and managerial consulting.

The NUBS has advanced its learning and teaching infrastructure. The new MBA Building was built according to the requirements of MBA teaching and has been put into use in the end of 2006. The classrooms, offices, meeting rooms, case discussion rooms, simulation rooms, and libraries are well equipped, which has laid down a solid foundation in hardware for the continuous development of the NUBS.

For years, the NUBS has been pursuing its goal of “cultivating firs-class talents, producing first-class research results, and providing first-class social services.” Today’s NUBS is a comprehensive business school with two disciplines of economics and management, and serves as both an influential training base for talents in economics and management and a center of academic research. All the faculty and students of the NUBS are getting united and striving to build it into a nationwide first-class and world known business school.
